Vote For Tom Peterson

My Bio

Since taking office in January 2025, I have worked to provide thoughtful, collaborative, and fiscally responsible leadership focused on caring for our community and creating confidence in our city's future. I believe local government works best when it listens carefully, plans thoughtfully, and brings people together around practical solutions. That means protecting taxpayers and household affordability, strengthening the City's long-term fiscal health, preserving the character and quality of life that make Fairfax special, advancing environmental stewardship, enhancing public safety, supporting excellent schools, and ensuring that City Hall remains transparent, accountable, and responsive to the people it serves. My goal has never been simply to make decisions. It has been to help build trust, encourage collaboration, and ensure that every decision reflects the long-term interests of our community. I believe the future of Fairfax should be created with the community, and my record reflects that commitment. I'll lead with purpose. I listen carefully. Think independently. Work collaboratively. Deliver results. I believe leadership begins by caring about all people and listening to them, and succeeds by bringing people together around practical solutions. This core principle has guided my work throughout more than four decades of public service and continue to shape how I serve Fairfax every day.

My Key Issues

Accessibility and inclusivity in public meetings

The process of listening and engaging in shared decision making works when we practice it through informed collaboration. When it comes to good government, two heads are better than one.

Urban planning and smart growth

We need better visioning, analysis, and collaboration on land use and development decisions to avoid near sighted decisions. If we don’t act soon enough, our City can forever lose its environmental character and sense of community. Development and redevelopment activities are critical to the City's economy and community design. Let’s be sure they consider a full range of targeted alternatives consistent with community values and complete analysis of costs and benefits. The City of Fairfax faces many outsized challenges that require it to do its homework carefully and work closely with citizens and businesses in the process. The City needs to be sure it is up to this task as it takes on new policy and planning decisions. The unique small town character of our City draws visitors due to our attractive natural environment, history, festivities, education, local shops, and arts. We should support this vision for the future and avoid becoming just another concrete jungle.Transportation improvements last several decades and both our transportation needs and available choices will change significantly over this time. As we plan, we should consider visionary alternatives that address tomorrow’s world.

Government Transparency
